Decorating Itch?

I went to one of those home parties last night. It was all about home decor. I probably bought too much but I still want to buy more. I bought these wall sconces and red candles to go in them and these hooks. Once you buy more then you should they suck you in and say “Oh, because you spent this much money you can buy this for only ten dollars.” Before you know it you’ve broke the bank and made hubby not so happy.

I came home and looked at my walls and thought “aaagrrr.” I spend all this money and I still need help.

I feel like I don’t know what I’m doing in the interior design department. I’m trying though. My house has these huge vaulted blank walls that I’m not sure what to do with. “Where do I put the dang clock?” How many little trinkets do I need to buy to fill in this space without it looking too cluttered? How much is too much? Not enough? IM000627

My girl friend told me that when hanging something, like a picture, put it where you want it and then drop it 6 inches and that is where it should go. So I guess I’ve hung everything too high. Great, more nail holes!

What I really need to do is fix my paint.

When we first moved in to this house I wanted to put a color on the walls. I picked out a slate blue grey that looked good with my tile and counter tops. I went to Lowes because that is where I found the paint chip that I liked. I asked them for a washable flat (that is what I had in my old house. It was Benjamin Moore and I like it.) The lady said they didn’t have such a thing and that I should get satin instead of flat. I said okay but at the last minute my hubby said that he didn’t want me to buy paint that I wasn’t happy with and was I sure that is what I wanted. I dunno! So at the last second I told the lady that I really wanted flat. She looked at me like I was crazy, (which I was, I know!) rolled her eyes and mixed up some flat for me.

I went home and started painting. As soon as it dried I knew I had done something terribly wrong. The paint was not waterproof at all. Splashes and grease show up and wont wash away. I can wipe the paint off with a wet rag. Blast!

I continued to paint. I figured it was my mistake and you can’t return paint anyway. We decided that we’d see how it wore with time and finger prints and repaint it later. Well, that was fine and all but then I ran out out paint. I sent hubby back for more and guess what he came back with…. A WASHABLE PAINT. I was soooo mad. {Stupid lady} They had what I wanted all along!

Well, I was almost finished and I figured I didn’t want to do it all over again so I sent hubbster back AGAIN for the original flat paint… I then painted the last little bit and when it dried it was the wrong color…. so now I have a painted line down the center of my wall. The different tones look like the wall bends or has a corner or something weird. IM000626 I had the clock over it to hide it but thought it drew attention…

So all in all, I need to repaint. Whenever someone comes over I feel like I have to explain this big, stupid-manda story and explain that I really do know how to paint and that it will be fixed someday when the kids are grown. In the mean time, I’m trying my best to decorate. If I put enough junk on the walls maybe no one will notice the crappy paint job.

You know what? You’ve got all your flickr photos protected, so when we click the thumbnails to view ‘em larger, it says the photo is private.

  2. Closs says:

okay I thought the picture private thing was just cause I read and don’t comment! *lol* It’s everyone then…okay now I don’t feel so bad..:)

I just kept those pictures private because then they didn’t show up on the recent flickr slide show. I thought it would look better on the site if I didn’t have everyday pics up there. Sorry. I also didn’t know that you couldn’t see a blow up of them. Next time I’ll just leave them as public.

  4. Hi! You’ve got great stuff on the wall. Here is a suggestion…take all of the items (clock, shelves, frames) and lay them out on the floor. Now pretend as though you are placing all of those items inside an invisible very large picture frame. They will look the best if they are placed together on the wall as a group within an invisible frame. i.e. Clock top left hand side, long shelf below, small shelf top right hand side, vertical frame top middle, horizontal frame, bottom right and the small frame bottom middle. Try to leave 3-6 inches between each item. Or, just pretend it’s one of your scrapbook layouts and they all need to fit onto one page…whatever works for you!

  5. Okay, I did a mock up of what it would look like, email me at melodyriches@gmail.com and I will forward the image onto you.
