After a busy day, I usually dread bedtime. It always just seems like so much work but once I’m there I love it.
When I get to Isaac’s room, I change him and play a short game of peekaboo. Then I wrap him up in a cozy blanket. I feed him and rock him to sleep. His little body is warm and still (except in the beginning when he likes to gouge out my face and try to stick his fingers in my nose). When he falls asleep it’s the only time of day he holds still. We can hear the muffled sounds of the house, the squeaky rocking chair and Isaac’s quiet breath and swallows. As he gets deeper into sleep I can finally relax in the dark room. I think about the events of the day and the to do’s of tomorrow. I finally get to lay the quiet body down. His mouth sometimes still moving up and down. He rolls over on his belly and I sneak out of the room.
Awwww… Peace.
I think that the best thing in the world is a sleeping baby.
What do you think is the best thing in the world?Â

Aw! I completely agree… what a beautiful moment.
I think the best thing in the world is… when my son will laugh and make up his own silly things to do. Like where did that come from?! It’s the best to know he has such a great imagination. I don’t think I had a very good imagination as a child, so I always hoped my children would
Yeah, me too! Warm sleepy babies. I love when they roll on to their tummies with their chubby little legs tucked underneath and their little bottoms sticking up in the air. Sweetness.
I agree. Sleeping baby is one of the best things like has to offer. Whether you are holding baby or just peeking into the crib while they sleep, and smelling their sweet baby smell, its just the best.
How about the way a baby’s neck smells when they are fresh out of a bath? Yum!
This weekend my 18 month old was sick and actually allowed himself to be rocked, and he fell asleep on me! I was so sad he was sick, but I was in heaven! He hasn’t fallen asleep in my arms since he was a baby!
Sleeping babies AND toddlers. It’s amazing the transformation. Craziness to peaceful gratitude!
Sleeping teenagers…the computer is shut down..no steros blaring or tv so loud you can’t hear yourself think…total bliss! *lol*
I think one of the best things in the world is the way my baby’s head smells. I call it “smellovision” – from the swet smell of my baby’s head to the not-so-sweet smell of my nine year old boy after some outside play or a baseball game. I’ve got a list of things I love like this, but this is actually at the top, right near a child sleeping on me, whether it’s my baby who cuddles close or my oldest (11 year old) daughter with her head on my lap while we watch a movie on Friday night.
That stillness you described of feeding your little one – that’s one of my favorite things about breasfeeding – the way it makes me slow down and relax and take in a little quiet time. With six children and lessons to be taught, and multitasking everywhere, it’s the only time of day I am still. I believe it was designed that way – feed your baby, sit down, relax, take time to rejuvinate before you jump back in.
It appears that the general consensus is that any sleeping child is the best thing in the world!
