I learned how to do realistic drop shadows in a tutorial on Misty Cato’s blog — I don’t know if it is still there. It was PSE friendly…! (Since then, I’ve seen tutorials in various others websites and/or books.) Essentially, you create a shadow in a new layer under the element, the same size as the element; then use the edit/transform command to change the shape of the *shadow* to create the illusion that the layer above it is warped. I usually pull the bottom right corner out and/or down a sight bit to make it look like that corner is slightly curled. As you’ve pointed out, you’ll need to adjustment the opacity of the shadow layer to make it look more realistic. You might also want to apply a slight Gaussian blur. Have fun!
