Having Choices

I went for my 20 week check up this week. Baby sounds good and my tummy continues to grow a couple weeks ahead of schedule. My midwife took my blood for some routine blood work. When she was done, I was holding the gauze on my arm and she asked, “Would you like a band aid or would you rather not?” I glanced down at my arm a little surprised. No one had ever asked me that before. The bleeding had stopped and I said, “I guess I’d rather not. I didn’t know I had the choice.”and then I gave a little “Whoo hoo!” This was followed by giggles from my midwife and her apprentice.

In thinking about it some more I realized that the band aid is the most painful part of getting blood taken. It makes it difficult to bend at the elbow until removed and always is painful to removed because of the sensitive skin. I always thought that it was just a part of getting blood taken but now… my arm has not had any pain at all from the small puncture and I haven’t even thought about it twice.

Now, I know this is something very small, a very small choice. But I had it presented to me where otherwise I probably wouldn’t have.  It made me quite happy to be working with this lovely lady and I look forward to the day when we can bring this new little one into the world.

Oh the little things in life…and a good thing to remember. From here on out I’m saying “no” to the bandaids!

I would have to agree with you on that one. The bandaid is the pain. I think I will tell them to leave it off from now on when I get pricked by those needles.

I guess I am like a kid and I have always liked the bandaid on the wound, I must be weird. Do you know if Emma is getting a sister, or Isaac is getting a brother yet??

I left on a bandaid too long one time (I never knew there was a ‘too long’), but I had a bruise for a week. Just some more info about bandaids when blood gets taken.

Hey, I just came across your blog off of Macy’s. Hey old roomie, I think it has been a decade! You family picture is cute and congratulations on baby number three! I think they get sweeter with each one, or maybe you just enjoy them more. It’s good to see what’s been keeping you busy all these years.

Congrats on being prego. You Jessica and Sara! FUN! I need your email cause im going private!

I like your positive spin on this, Mandy. I would’ve just assumed she was trying to cut costs. I guess there’s no question who here is “glass half empty” and “glass half full.”
