An Unwelcomed Change

My life is over as I know it.

As the light of dawn threatened to touch the early morn, long before the creeping sun dare crest the great mountains to the east of my window, I was awakened by a faint sound. It was the sound of metal. A sound that I immediately recognized.  A sound I did not want to hear at that unearthly hour. It was a gentle touch but none the less, undesirable.

The sound was consistent. I doubted that there was any chance the sound would stop. I knew the body that was making the sound would not, at any time, stop and fall to the ground unconsciously in sleep as I found myself wishing it would.

The sound was that of tiny 18 month old fingers, reaching up to a door knob. It was the 18 month olds very own door knob. And that meant only one thing.

The touch of the door now was joined with some non-rhythmic beating. Not the sound of a usual knock but of a wee child demanding freedom and extraction from its sleeping chamber. As the racket built in loudness there was soon sounds of a muffled yelling. “Mawwww-mmmah!”

The time passed for ignoring the sound. I then heard sounds of someone rising from their bed, opening the captive’s door, which brought sounds of  joy and laughter at the liberation. Small feet ran to me. The small fingers clamored onto me as they scaled the bedside.

Leah can now climb out of her crib.

    Sorry for freeing the captive

  2. Dana says:

I had my suspicions about who the liberator was (given Elsa’s feelings toward her younger sibling, I figured Emma and Isaac probably wouldn’t mind leaving Leah in her room). Sorry the little stinker inherited your climbing skills. Maybe sticking her in one of those sleep-sacks would slow her down? I bet you could make one.

I can’t help but to laugh. It happened to me when my son was about 1 year old. He could climb out of his crib, so I had to get him a toddler bed.
    You will be ok. :)
P.S. You have some mad writing skills.

  4. Debbie Grandma says:

She did indeed inherit your climbing skills. What goes around, comes around! Love that little captive!

  5. DoggiNo says:

  6. Ryan says:

ahahahahah I liked the way you told that.

  7. Carrie says:

Oh man. that was good! YOu should write some horror, suspense novels. At first I was thinking that noise was some creepy guy trying to break in, but no….this is much, much worse.
    Good luck.

I’m thankful that it took my child until 2 yrs 8 months to perform that dastardly task. Funny thing is, it happened last night, too.

  9. JenM says:

OMG – you scared the crap out of me, lol. I was definitely expecting the worst, lol (I mean horrific worst). That made the ending much more sweeter and funnier, lol. I agree with what someone else said – you should write stories or something, lol – that was awesome! “Congrats” on the milestone – I remember that day myself :)

  10. Emilee says:

    that.really.stinks.
